Monday, October 19, 2009 Sumitomo Announces a Run-flat Tire Breakthrough
Japanese manufacturer Sumitomo Rubber Industries just announced it has come up with a new run-flat tire design. This new idea uses four proprietary technologies combined into what Sumitomo calls a “thermal control technology,” saying it provides ride comfort equal or even better to that of regular tires. The four technologies are aramid casing, high thermal conductivity materials, dimple sidewall design, and Sumitomo’s Combined Technology Tire (CTT) casing profile. This allows a 30% thinner sidewall that weights 3% less. The dimple in the sidewall enhances airflow around the tire for better cooling. (ED)
