Scrap Tires to Be Used for Steel Making in Australia

Burning scrap rubber in blast furnaces is not new but an Australian university recently developed a new, more efficient process to do so. The project for Sustainable Materials Research and Technologies of the University of South Wales has resulted in a patented process to use scrap tires in the steel manufacturing process, thus substituting the coke. Local steel maker OneSteel has developed a partnership with the university and is running trials of the new process at its Sydney and Melbourne electric-arc furnace facilities. According to the university, the process has made steelmaking cheaper, as it uses less natural resources and electrical energy and reduces many emissions. (ED)
