Monday, October 03, 2011 Production-Ready Thermoplastic Wheel Rim
 BASF and smart joined forces at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt, showcasing the “smart forvision” - a new concept vehicle from smart shod with the world’s first thermoplastic wheel rims.
The all-plastic wheel rims are over 30 percent lighter than a standard production aluminum wheel. Weighing in at only 6 kg, these rims are made of a new specialty polyamide Ultramid Structure from BASF.
The rims are made of two parts: the actual supporting component and a wheel cover (also manufactured from BASF Ultramid). The wheel cover can be painted any colour - even the same colour as the vehicle. In Frankfurt, it was shown – like the complete “smart forvision” - in white and copper.
