The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile), the teams, represented by the FOTA (Formula One Teams Association), and the FOM (Formula One Management), based on the proposals of the Italian company guaranteeing competitors the technical and operational stability, chose Pirelli as their official tire provider.
According to Formula One rules, established by the governing body that sanctions international motorsports, the FIA, this new contract specifies that Pirelli will provide the teams with six different tires for the 2011 season: 4 different slick tires for different dry track surfaces, one rain tire and one intermediate tire for wet or light rain conditions
Pirelli is also proud to announce that they will also provide the tires for the international GP2 series – renowned step to climb to Formula One – for three years, from 2011 to 2013.
This new agreement with Formula One marks the historical involvement of Pirelli in international motorsports, which dates back from 1907 when the Italian company won the epic Paris-Peking race. Pirelli is currently the exclusive provider of some of the most important motorsports championships worldwide, such as the GP3 series, the World Rally Championship, the Rolex Sports Car Series in North America, the World Superbike Championship, and the World Motocross Championship. Furthermore, Pirelli also provides 70 other national and international championships. The last Pirelli Formula One victory dates back to 1991 at the Canadian Grand Prix when Nelson Piquet won the race with his Benetton.
