Monday, March 29, 2010 NHTSA Tire Fuel Efficiency Grading
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has published a final rule on tire fuel efficiency grading. NHTSA has issued a 195-page document on its Web site on March 25. It will finalized later but already, the standard asks for tire manufacturers to grade replacement tires for fuel efficiency by means of rolling resistance, safety (traction), and durability (treadware). These mentions will be set by testing methods set forth in the rule within 12 months of the rule’s publication. According to the final rules, comparing the three different ratings will help the consumers see how different replacement tires can affect the fuel economy they can get from their vehicle. (ED)
