Wednesday, February 04, 2009 Learning to Drive on Snow and Ice
Winter tires are mandatory during the cold season in Quebec. Unfortunately, though most people there have been driving on snowy and icy roads for years, many still don’t know how to react in dangerous situations and, what’s more, they don’t know how to use their winter tires properly. That is why ex-road racer (and Jacques Villeneuve’s partner in Formula Atlantic) Claude Bourbonnais has set up a winter driving school in Hudson, close to Montreal. The 4-hour lessons are given on a frozen lake Saturdays and Sundays in February as customers learn how to react with their own vehicle. “Tires can do one of three things: accelerate, turn, or stop. Knowing what to choose in case of a dangerous situation is what we teach,” says the instructor, who would like tire merchants to promote his driving lessons to prove how effective their winter tires can be. Claude can be reached at 514-824-0263 or racercan@aol.com. (ED)
