Thursday, June 02, 2011 Continental Produces its Two Millionth Tire With Puncture Protection
On May 31st, at the Continental tire plant in Lousado, Portugal, the two millionth tire with ContiSeal technology has been built.
The 235/45 ZR 17 dimension tire will be mounted on a Volkswagen Passat as original equipment. Continental has been manufacturing car tires with ContiSeal technology since 2008. These tires are sealed with a viscous mass that is mounted on the inside of the tread layer. In case of punctures by nails and screws the resulting hole is immediately closed without pressure loss and the journey can proceed trouble-free.
Even holes that were caused by objects up to five millimeters in diameter can be closed. Around 85 percent of flat-tires are avoided.
The tires are manufactured in 8 sizes and are used in both the original equipment and replacement markets. Continental expects the approval to come during this year for original equipment from other manufacturers.
