Volvo Plug-ins and Diesels Coming to America

Though its future is still uncertain, Swedish automaker Volvo’s U.S. chief, Doug Speck, recently confirmed that the company he represents will add diesel models and plug-in hybrids to the American market; he also promised more fuel-efficient gasoline engines in order to meet tougher fuel economy standards. Speck didn’t mention any local launch date for new hybrids and diesels in America but he did affirm that there will be a plug-in hybrid launched in Europe by 2012. Among other technologies expected are direct injection engines and more efficient gearboxes. (ED)
