Toyota Now World's Largest Carmaker—Passes GM

It’s been reported that Toyota now has the title of “World’s Largest Automaker” and it passed GM for the first time in 77 years. Toyota sold 8.972 million cars and trucks around the world in 2008, about 616,000 vehicles more than GM's 8.356 million.

Because of the global economic meltdown, sales worldwide fell by 3.5 million vehicles.
GM has been attempting to shrink its operations and must submit its restructuring plan to Washington by March 31 to prove its viability and hold on to the government loans it recently received. (SB)
