Mazda Wants a Hybrid Drivetrain

Mazda Motor Corp will soon convert to hybrid technology, wanting to add gasoline-electric drivetrains to its lineup in the next decade. The technology would be added to existing models and not hybrid-only models like the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight. In the past, Mazda thought it could only improve the fuel efficiency of its gasoline engines and its transmissions, but now that carbon dioxide requirements are getting tougher, its engineers are going hybrid too. Nevertheless, Mazda will continue to improve its engines and trannies to improve the fuel consumption of its global fleet 30% by 2015. (ED)
