Friday, February 12, 2010 Future Cadillacs Could Be Rear-wheel Drive Hybrids
General Motors’ Two Mode hybrid powertrain could very well migrate to rear-wheel drive cars in the future, according to Tom Stephens, GM’s vice chairman of global products operations. Many analysts see the Cadillac brand as a candidate for such a configuration. GM already announced it was developing an electric motor that is 25% smaller and 20% more powerful than the actual motor used in today’s Two Mode hybrid full-sized trucks. Because of its smaller size, it will also be used in cars. Though some experts think GM will come up with a car smaller than the CTS (they call it the ATS), they think that is where the electric motor is headed. The next-generation CTS could also get it in 2012. (ED)
