Monday, May 25, 2009 Daimler Takes 10% Stake in Tesla
German manufacturer Daimler AG (Mercedes-Benz) has announced it has acquired 10% of California auto maker Tesla Motors. Both companies have recently been working closely to integrate Tesla’s lithium-ion battery packs and charging electronics into the first thousand units of a Daimler electric version of its Smart minicar. Later this year, Daimler’s Smart assembly plant in Hambach in France will begin assembling about 1,000 Smart ForTwo with electric drive mostly for testing in Germany and Italy. Starting in 2012, Daimler plans to equip all Smart and Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles with its own produced lithium-ion batteries. (ED)
